The USA produced a dominant performance in their FIVB World Championship Last 16 clash with Canada — sweeping their fellow North Americans to progress to the competition’s quarter-finals.
Erik Sullivan’ side were comprehensive winners in Bangkok (25-18, 25-21, 25-21), as Madi played an important role in her team’s triumph.
Our LOVB Austin star racked up 12 points from 10 kills, a block and an ace, putting her in the top-three scorers at the Indoor Stadium Huamark.
And Madi was delighted with the United States’ showing in their first knockout match of the tournament.
“I'm really proud of us,” she said, when speaking after the game. “I think it's really hard, especially this late in the tournament, to come out and just be aggressive and dominant the whole way through.
So to compete against a really good Canada team and kind of put it on them from point one was really good, so I'm really happy for us.”
Giovanni Guidetti’s outfit are renowned for the strength of their blocking defense, but the U.S. Women’s National Team handled Monday’s occasion with aplomb.
“I think [the key was] just going for it whenever we're comfortable,” Madi explained.
“Then just being smart when we're uncomfortable — and trying to recycle as much as we can, and get the ball back on our side.
“But I think, overall, just trusting one another in every scenario was really helpful for us tonight.”
Madi will be hoping that approach pays off again on Thursday, when the United States take on Türkiye in the quarter-finals.
But the 24-year-old is confident that her team can enjoy more success, if they continue sticking to their playing philosophy.
“Just trying to play USA volleyball [is the best approach], she said.
“Continuing to trust our systems and knowing that what we've worked on so far is going to carry us through — and just, again, having fun and enjoying it.”
The USA’s clash with Türkiye gets underway at 8.30pm ICT on 4th September, with the winner set to play either the Netherlands or Japan in Saturday’s semi-final.
