Austin ended the LOVB Pro regular season with a 3-2 defeat to Salt Lake, but will have an immediate opportunity to exact revenge on the Utah-based side.
That’s because Madi’s team face Salt Lake again in the LOVB Finals, with a tantalizing quarter-final match-up lying in store this Thursday.
They will need to improve upon their most recent display against the No.4 seeds, though, after letting a 2-1 lead slip in the last two sets at the Bruin Arena.
Austin started strongly and won Saturday’s opening set 25:18, before Tama Miyashiro’s unit levelled things up by claiming Set 2 (16:25).
The visitors then immediately reclaimed the lead (25:23), ahead of a late rally from Salt Lake — winning back-to-back sets to secure victory (17:25 and 13:15).
As a result, Austin end the regular season in fifth spot, with head coach Chris McGown targeting a better performance when the teams meet again.
“Serve receive let us down again, and the moments when we needed to be fearless, we were playing a little bit afraid — that was the disappointing part for me,” he said, when speaking after the match.
“Salt Lake, they're banged up, you could tell, they were playing all these funny lineups with different people coming in and out.
“They got great production out of [Heidy] Casanova. She absolutely lit us up. They passed pretty well, actually, in times when they needed to.
“Congratulations to them for making a huge comeback. 12-8 is a lot in the fifth and they served their way out of it.
“We'll see them again soon and try and learn as much as we can from this match and be a little braver when we play them again Thursday.”
One positive from the game was Madi’s personal points haul, after registering a team-leading 18 kills and hitting .350. She recorded two aces, two blocks and two digs in Gameweek 13.
With 227 points across the campaign to date, the 23-year-old will be looking to finish 2025 strongly when the post-season gets underway at the KFC Yum! Center in just a few days time.
