Who are the United States’ opponents?
A North American derby lies in store for the U.S. Women’s National Team, as they prepare to face Canada in the 2025 Volleyball World Championship round of 16.
It’s not the first time the USA have played Giovanni Guidetti’s side this summer, either, following their Nations League preliminary round match-up in mid-July.
That game finished 3-2 in the United States’ favor, with Madi registering 16 kills, a block and two aces.
Where is the game being played?
Having played their Pool D preliminary round matches at Korat Chatchai Hall in Nakhon Ratchasima, the action now moves to Bangkok for the round of 16 — and the quarter-finals onwards, too, if Erik Sullivan’s team progress past Canada.
The 8000-seat Indoor Stadium Huamark will stage every knockout round game, having undergone a set of renovations earlier this year.
It was first opened back in 1966 and has hosted everything from pop concerts to boxing, basketball and volleyball over almost six decades.
What time does the match get underway?
The match is scheduled to begin at 5pm local time (ICT) on Monday 1st September, which means a remarkably early start if you’re based on the West Coast — 3am PDT to be precise!
It’s at a slightly more palatable hour if you’re on the East Coast, though, getting underway at 6am EDT.
Opposition guide
Canada secured qualification from Pool C with one game to spare, beating Bulgaria 3-1 (25-23, 25-18, 23-25, 25-18) in their opening game, before recording a 3-2 victory over Spain on Matchday 2 (22-25, 28-26, 24-26, 25-15, 15-10).
That left a showdown with Türkiye to determine top spot, which their opponents won convincingly — sweeping Canada to finish first and progress to play Slovenia.
But it has nonetheless been a positive group stage for the North Americans, who have improved significantly on their 16th-place Nations League showing earlier in the year.
One player to watch out for is outside hitter Andrea Mitrovic, who is Canada’s top scorer at the tournament after racking up 46 points to date.
Anything else to know?
The United States are in fine form heading into this round of 16 clash, having won all three of their Pool D encounters against Slovenia (3-1), Argentina (3-1) and Czechia (3-0).
And Madi has also been enjoying the tournament so far, with a trio of solid displays yielding a total of 28 points — 13 of which came against Slovenia in the team’s opening match.
She’ll be targeting another strong showing and progress to the quarter-finals, where the USA would face either Türkiye or the aforementioned Slovenians.
