The U.S. Women’s National Team suffered elimination at the quarter-final stage in Bangkok — but Madi can still look back on a host of highlights from the FIVB World Championship.
Our LOVB Austin star will of course be disappointed following her side’s 3-1 defeat to Türkiye (25-14, 22-25, 25-14, 25-23), during which she contributed two points in Set 3 of the contest.
However, the 24-year-old’s time at the tournament featured plenty of positives, across five matches in Thailand.
The USA’s campaign kicked off with a 3-1 triumph over Slovenia, during which Madi put in her best points-scoring performance in the competition.
She posted 13 points from 10 kills, a block and two aces on that occasion, to ensure Erik Sullivan’s outfit got off to a positive start at Korat Chatchai Hall.
Madi wasn’t quite as prolific in the second Pool D game against Argentina — but nonetheless recorded a commendable seven points from five kills and two blocks, as the United States confirmed qualification to the knockout rounds.
There was still time for another group stage victory, though, as a sweep of Czechia wrapped up the team’s time in Nakhon Ratchasima in style.
Once again, Madi made a major contribution to that triumph, by putting eight points on the board (six kills and two blocks).
That gave her an impressive group stage total of 28 points, and there was more to come when the action moved to Bangkok for a last 16 clash against Canada.
The Katy-born opposite hitter racked up 12 points from 10 kills, a block and an ace — placing her inside the top three scorers at the Indoor Stadium Huamark — as the United States swept their North American opponents.
Unfortunately, she wasn’t able to have quite the same impact against a Türkiye side who came into the quarter-finals in sensational form.
For context, the USA’s 25-22 third set win was the first set that Daniele Santarelli’s unit had lost all tournament.
“Obviously [it is] disappointing in the moment,” said head coach Sullivan, following his team’s exit.
“I don’t think we played our best this evening. Türkiye played really well. They did some things early on that put some pressure on us that was different from what we had seen, but I loved the fact that we were resilient and competed through the whole match.
“We gave ourselves a shot there at the end. We just couldn’t convert on a couple of plays. I love the foundation that we’re building for the four years.
“It was a great summer for us in a bunch of aspects, but we’ve got to find ways to perform in these bigger moments.”
Madi’s two blocks against Türkiye took her total for the competition to 42 points, as she wrapped up a summer full of impressive international moments — across the Volleyball Nations League and FIVB World Championship.
