Austin endured a challenging start to February, but it wasn’t long before the Texans began hitting their stride.
Madi’s team kicked off the month by attending a Weekend with LOVB event at Atlanta’s Gateway Center Arena in Gameweek 4.
Unfortunately, their solitary outing in Georgia resulted in a 3-2 defeat to Salt Lake — and it was a similar story the following week, as Austin lost 3-1 against Houston on home ground.
The latter of those matches saw Madi put in a commendable performance, at least, as she racked up 23 points despite being on the losing side.
Nonetheless, the whole team were desperate to bounce back from consecutive defeats, as they headed to the inaugural LOVB Classic in Kansas City.
This mid-season tournament consisted of three rounds — quarter-finals, semi-finals and a final — with losing sides returning to action on the final day, to determine the competition’s overall rankings.
Austin were handed an immediate opportunity for revenge against Salt Lake, who had beaten them earlier in the month.
They seized that chance, too, defeating Tama Miyashiro’s charges 3-1 to progress to a semi-final against Atlanta.
The No.1 seeds were in fine form, however, having won their previous six matches in succession.
And Atlanta were ultimately too strong for Austin, running out 3-1 winners — though Madi’s side still had the chance to finish a commendable third by winning the tournament’s third-place playoff.
That’s exactly how things panned out, as a morale-boosting 3-1 triumph over Omaha set the Texans up perfectly for a Weekend with LOVB double-header at H-E-B Center at Cedar Park.
The team were playing their first matches under interim head coach Chris McGown, following Marco Bonitta’s sudden departure for personal reasons — and his tenure started in style, as Austin impressed the home fans with back-to-back victories.
They dispatched Houston 3-1 in the opening match of Gameweek 7, with Madi amassing 26 points and being named Player of the Game.
Salt Lake were then beaten by the same scoreline, to round off a successful second half of February for the 23-year-old and her Austin side.
